美国总统奥巴马认为年收入在25万美元的人群为有钱人。这也观点受到美国保守派的抨击，也许奥巴马把这一数字定的太高了。
一项新的调查显示，美国人认为年收入在15万或者个人资产在100万美元，就可以归为有钱人一族。年收入在15万美元以上人群，占美国全国人口的10%。
美国人标准15万美元/年或净资产100万美元
有30%人觉得10万美元一年可以叫做有钱人，另有18%人群认为年收入6万美元就应该称作为有钱人。不过也有15%人认为，有钱人的标准应该是年收入100万美元以上。
男性对有钱人的定义是年收入15万美元，而女性这一数字为10万美元。
净资产方面，调查显示，人们认为有钱人的标准应该在100万美元，与2003年的调查基本相同。有26%人群认为100万美元净资产可以成为有钱人，14%认为应该在500万美元以上，不过也有13%人群认为只需要10万美元。
