福布斯发布了一篇回首2011中国汽车市场的文章。文章指出2011年，美国通用汽车超过日本丰田成为中国市场的领军人物。在2011年，通用一共销售了254万7千辆汽车，和2010年相比上升了8.3%。而日本丰田全年销售88万3千辆汽车，同比只上升4%，是自2004年增长最慢的一年。福特销售51万9千辆汽车，同比上升7%。
美国汽车三巨头复苏
经过多年的惨淡经营，美国汽车工业正在一点点复苏。最近几年，美国汽车工业正在赢得市场份额，提升利润率，提高生产力，并迎合消费者。底特律的汽车三巨头–通用，克莱斯勒，福特，自2009接受政府救济以来，重获新生。
对比之下，日本丰田受到了2011年初的日本海啸影响，而使其失去了一些市场份额。日本丰田计划在2012年在中国的汽车销量突破100万辆。
通用汽车的全年表现显然是初人意料的。作为底特律的汽车龙头，通用在2011年每12秒就卖出一辆汽车或卡车。通用汽车在中国拥有11家合资伙伴，员工总数达到3万5千人以上，汽车销售人员达到2700人，销售网遍及全国。
中国市场依旧潜力巨大
中国为全球汽车工业提供了巨大的机会。根据世界银行数据显示，在中国平均每1000人拥有37辆汽车。而巴西每1000人拥有249辆，美国为每1000人828辆，最多的摩纳哥每1000人拥有汽车863辆。收入和国民生产总值的日益增长正满足这作为世界第二大经济国汽车工业的需求。
然而2012的经济前景也对汽车工业产生不可避免的影响。中国GDP从2011年第一季度的9.7%下降到第三季度的9.1%，预测2012全年为8.4%。
汽车巨头们当然也考虑到了这些，但如此好的开端又如何不对未来保持乐观呢。
